2018 Chin and Sthd for Survival B2J Collect all 60,000 4/15/2018 6/30/2018 Since we will be collecting fish being tagged during the spring, we will need to provide the codes of the fish released to PTAGIS staff on a weekly basis.
Project
Title: Transportation and survival research
Project Lead: Tiffani Marsh
Agency: NMFS
Project Number: USCOE TPE-W-04-1 & TPE-W-00-4; BPA 1993-029-00
Funding Agency: USACE
Project Objectives: The Corps AFEP seasonal effects of transportation study with which I am involved will require the use of the SbyC collection system at Bonneville Dam in 2018. If you have any questions concerning these projects, contact Tiffani Marsh at (206) 860-3235 or via email Tiffani.Marsh@noaa.gov. The objective of collecting juvenile wild yearling Chinook salmon and wild and hatchery steelhead at Bonneville Dam is to determine the effects of hydropower operations on inriver migrating fish. The recapture of adult fall Chinook salmon at the Lower Granite Dam trap ended in 2017 with the return of fish tagged in 2012, the final year of tagging.
Study Description: As in past years, wild yearling Chinook salmon and wild and hatchery steelhead tagged for the BPA-funded reach survival study will be collected at Bonneville Dam for the gathering of length and condition data. We are continuing an intensified appraisal of fish condition at the time of tagging at Lower Granite Dam and need to recapture fish at Bonneville to collect length, weight, and fish condition data. This data will allow us to determine the effects of hydropower operations on inriver migrating fish. We anticipate that less than 600 fish of each group will be collected Because 2017 was the final year of recapturing returning adult fall Chinook salmon at the Lower Granite Dam trap, we are not requesting any SbyC activities at that location for this research.
Juvenile
Juvenile Description: The wild spring/summer Chinook salmon and wild and hatchery steelhead being recaptured at Bonneville Dam will be tagged at Lower Granite Dam during the 2018 spring outmigration for the reach survival study. Up to 20,000 of each group will be tagged and released into the dam's tailrace, although we anticipate fewer than 600 fish from each species and rear-type combination will be collected.
Smolt-to-Adult Ratio: SARs are one of the primary objectives of the overall tagging in 2018.
