Project
Title: Monitoring and evaluation of BY2016 Chinook Salmon smolts released from Idaho hatcheries in the Clearwater and Salmon River basins.
Project Lead: Matt Belnap
Agency: IDFG
Project Number: F16AC00027mod1
Funding Agency: LSRCP
Project Objectives: The proposed PIT tagged release groups are designed to address two research priorities identified by IDFG management and research staffs: 1) improved stock composition for in-season management of spring/summer Chinook Salmon fisheries in the Clearwater and Salmon rivers, and 2) more precise estimates of hatchery specific SARs in the Clearwater and Salmon river watersheds. Additionally, these PIT tag releases will complement the existing CSS tagging programs at Rapid River, McCall, and Dworshak fish hatcheries. When collected, 30% of the releases will be bypassed (returned to river) and 70% will be handled the same as the run-at-large.
Study Description: Clearwater Hatchery These releases of spring/summer Chinook Salmon from Clearwater Fish Hatchery are not ESA listed and were not PIT tagged prior to 2006, aside from a few hundred fish tagged for survival estimates from the release sites to Lower Granite Dam. In 2006 IDFG initiated a large-scale PIT tagging program that included 45,000 fish (15,000 for each of three release sites - Red River, Selway, Powell). In 2016 an additional 17,100 PITs were added when an additional smolt release group was established from direct releases from Clearwater Fish Hatchery into the NF Clearwater. The 2018 PIT tagging proposal for Clearwater Fish Hatchery is similar to the one proposed by IDFG and approved by FPAC in 2017 with one notable difference. In 2017, the Clearwater Hatchery Clear Creek release was divided into two smaller releases with separate tagging groups. For 2018, we have combined those two release groups into the single Clearwater Hatchery release at Clear Creek because we no longer have two separate stocks at that location. Kooskia Fish Hatchery Beginning in migration year 2014, the SbyC request for Chinook smolts from the Kooskia Hatchery release was included in this project request. PIT tags are split out proportionally between the smolt groups released at Clear Creek by Clearwater Hatchery and Kooskia Hatchery, so it was logical to add the Kooskia Hatchery releases to this request. The total number of PIT tags released at Clear Creek by the two hatcheries is 17,100. Sawtooth Hatchery The large-scale representative PIT tagging program at Sawtooth Fish Hatchery was initiated in 2007. This hatchery stock is included under the ESA listing for the Snake River spring/summer Evolutionary Significant Unit (ESU). In 2007 we indicated that the program at Sawtooth Fish Hachery would be implemented annually and the program has been ongoing since that time. Pahsimeroi Hatchery The large-scale representative PIT tagging program at Pahsimeroi Fish Hatchery was initiated in 2008. This hatchery stock is included under the ESA listing for the Snake River spring/summer Evolutionary Significant Unit (ESU). In 2007 we indicated that the program at Pahsimeroi Fish Hatchery would be implemented annually and the program has been ongoing since that time.
Juvenile
Juvenile Description: Species: Spring/Summer Chinook Salmon Life stage at release: smolt Clearwater Hatchery Spring/Summer Chinook ESA listing: not listed Kooskia Hatchery Spring Chinook ESA listing: not listed Sawtooth Hatchery Chinook ESA listing: Threatened Pahsimeroi Hatchery Chinook ESA listing: Threatened Kooskia Hatchery Clear Creek release group (Clear Creek stock): 8,000 PIT tags to be released in March 2018. Red River release group (South Fork Clearwater stock): 17,100 PIT tags to be released in March 2018. North Fork Clearwater release group (Dworshak stock): 17,100 PIT tags to be released in March 2018. Selway River release group (Dworshak/Kooskia stock): 17,100 PIT tags to be released in March 2018. Clearwater Hatchery Clear Creek release group (Kooskia Hatchery/ Dworshak stock): 8,700 PIT tags to be released in March 2018. Powell Ponds release group (Crooked River and South Fork Salmon River stocks): 25,500 PIT tags to be released in March 2018. Sawtooth Hatchery Salmon River release group at Sawtooth Weir (Upper Salmon River stock): 18,900 PIT tags to be released in April 2018. Yankee Fork release group in Yankee Fork River (Upper Salmon River stock): 2,500 PIT tags to be released in April 2018. Pahsimeroi Hatchery Pahsimeroi River release group (Pahsimeroi River stock): 21,400 PIT tags to be released in April 2018.
Smolt-to-Adult Ratio: Approximately 70% of the PIT tags released will be classified as "Monitor Mode" to monitor SAR.
Collection Efficiency: Approximately 30% of the PIT tags released will be classified as "Default" and returned to the river to monitor collection efficiency and estimate juvenile survival.
