Date Time Who What ---------- ----- -------- ----------------------------------------------- 09/07/2005 16:42 DICKL The small-trawl sampling effort in the lower brackish portion of the estuary began on 16 May and finished on 8 June. We averaged 4 hours of detector on-time each sample day. Detection results were disappointing: only 38 fish were detected. One yearling Chinook salmon previously detected at Jones Beach on 24 May at 11 PM near low tide was subsequently detected 34.8 hours later in the lower estuary. A wireless video link used between the underwater antenna and the tow vessel showed relatively few fish passing through the antenna relative to the large trawl system. We spent 5 sample days along the south side of the ship navigation channel in water generally greater than 45 ft deep (sample depth 14 feet). We spent 7 sample days along the north side of Desdamona Sands in water ranging from 25 to 35 ft deep. We also conducted 5 sample cruises in this location at night (from about 6 PM to midnight). We concluded that the small trawl system as developed, can be routinely and safely used in the lower estuary. The antenna and related electronics worked well in salinity ranging to at least 17%. However, the collection net is quite small relative to the size of the lower estuary. ####End of Event Log for ESX###
