Juvenile fish are now being diverted out through the long bypass outfall pipe to the river and through PIT-tag detection. (Due to very cold temperatures, and concern with freezing pipes, we had temporarily switched over to primary bypass mode on the morning of November 28.) Due to really cold temperatures we are seeing right now and anticipated colder temps tonight and tomorrow, this morning Lower Granite stopped passing fish through the separator for PIT tag detections. Fish are now going out the main facility 72 inch bypass pipe. It is supposed to get warmer in a couple of days and we will look at going back to passing fish through the separator when that happens. Hopefully we can get several weeks more PIT tag detection before Dec 16. So far in November, they have detected 3028 hatchery Chinook and 64 wild Chinook at Granite. At McNary, they lost the power cord to the side dewatering screen cleaner last night. This cable is a caterpillar track type system that rides back and forth in a large aluminum trough. Apparently a hinge pin broke and then things piled up breaking other pieces. It is out of action now. The side dewatering screen regulates total channel flow and elevation and is critical for operations. Since the project can't keep this screen clean with all of the aquatic weeds in the river now, they are switching to using the emergency bypass system, routing fish out the north ice and trash sluiceway exit. They will run this way through Dec 15 and while the fish screens are being pulled. They often operate this way when it is really cold to keep things from freezing on them. I talked to Brad about seeing if we could limp along and collect more PIT tag data. However with really cold weather the next few days, if we had a problem and had to dewater to go to emergency bypass due to screen cleaning, icing would be a serious safety and logistic problem doing this. McNary has only had 210 hatchery and 3 wild Snake River fall Chinook in November, so the numbers aren't as high there. Also , Ice harbor is operating too, so we have that site. If you have any concerns on these operations or questions, please give me a call. The new map file monitors the passage of all tags at the A- and B-Separator monitors, rather than trying to divert them by default. The new configuration will remain in place as long as the facility is operational this year. Because of extreme latency in the pcAnywhere connections, especially to GRJ-PC2, I was unable to synchronize the PC clocks more precisely than three seconds from atomic time, and six seconds from each other. 11/20/2006 08:23 Darren PSMFC was informed today by site biologist Mike Halter that the facility will continue to have water over the separator until December 15th. 11/18/2006 08:30 darren@r SLC500:CommsFailure: Alarm noted. Although the MultiMon computers are wired through an uninteruptible power supply (UPS), the UPS batteries died (as expected) after 45 minutes, at around 10:30AM. Power was not restored to the facility until 11:27AM. Although the computers were off-line for only 57 minutes, the facility was without power for about 100 minutes. All transcievers checked and adjustments were made where needed. 52 and 53 were locked up in an overrun state when checked. It was found that each individual transciever when ran alone had no noise but when they were all on the noise gradually returned. 53 was moved farther down stream away from 52 and re-turned. This helped for while. I threw sticks on A and B gate (10 each side) an all were diverted and read properly. I then returned to 51,52, and 53 and the noise had return. I then swapped the entire sink order and made 53 the master. This seems to be working. PSMFC will monitor for future overruns. One question that needs answering is: 51 is powered from the same receptical as F2, could there be noise feeding back on the ground and affecting the entire Sample Tank monitor? Found that the cylinder was binding the gate. Yesterday it was thought that the cylinder was bad. After loosening the mounting bolts and re-aligning the gate it appears that the cylinder is ok. I got back with Kent and it was determined that they definately do not have a spare cylinder. PSMFC will be on site tomorrow to try and resolve the problem possibly by changing out solenoids although all indications point towards a bad cylinder. The B flume was shut down when I spoke with Kent at 5:30 PM PDT. I recommended that he shut down the air and check to see if the gate traveled freely. I also recommended that he try increasing the pressure as that is what I had to do to get the gate to work earlier today. He said he would try that and that we would converse via phone in the am. 05/30/2006 12:27 Troy A GMC was performed 5/30/2006. All transceivers were checked and tuned as necessary. It was found that A gate was only opening 2 to three inches. I took the 2 way solenoid apart and noticed alot of oil build up on one end. I put in the plug and pilot air and still could not get the gate to open with out greatly increasing the travel open time. Another inspection of the inside of the soleniod resulting in the finding of a O-Ring that was periodically lodging in one of the port and blocking the internal piston from shifting. I removed the broken O-ring and tried the gate again. I suspected the O- ring came from the cylinder so I replace the gate cyclinder and all systems are a go. Port plugging and pilot air will most likely happen next week for the B side. A gates new times are below and both gates are operating at 65 PSI. The other ~225 "mis-directs" in the last 24 hours are tagged fish that were diverted (as by-catch) back to the river along with the intended diversion targets. This 1-in-10 tagged bycatch ratio is not unusual during high passage periods such as this. The untagged bycatch ratio is likely much higher right now. 05/13/2006 10:52 Alan DGE is showing decreased efficiencies for the separator gates (A- 88%, B- 90%) for the lat 24hrs. Asst Site Bio Kent Blevins is working the separator today at GRJ. He reports that the gates are operating properly. PTAGIS Field Operations will continue to monitor. 05/12/2006 15:21 Dave I updated the GRJ map file to GRJ06132.MAP. This version terminates collection of AC-32 (DSS-RR - Disease Susceptibility Study fish from RAPH) at noon (PDT) on May 14. PC clocks are within 3 seconds of each other and 19 seconds of atomic time. I observed tag 3D9.1BF25D3AAA swimming "upstream" from antenna D3 to D2. Probably too much water and/or not enough velocity in the delivery pipe. 05/12/2006 08:50 Alan_Bro Correction to my PIT Event of 5/9/2006: the GMC was performed 5/9/2006. 05/11/2006 16:26 Dave Updated map and db files to GRJ06131.MAP and GRJ06131.DB, respectively. DB file contains new codes for AC-83 and AC-84. These are 0-age fall Chinook to be collected at GRJ (AC-83, FC0GRJ) and 0-age fall Chinook to be transported from GRJ (AC-84, FC0XPT). The new map file contains the instructions to collect and transport these groups, respectively. Additionally, I set the divert quota for AC-31 to 1 in order to minimize the number of "No-Op" diversions at the Charlie Gate (although Doug has already addressed this problem in the DGE configuration schema). (I've just verified that this has no inpact on the No-Op Divert messages from MultiMon; the issue is the use of the "X" status indicator for Protocol 6; I'll have to see what setting the over-quota status to "0" does.) Per Billy Connor, I disabled further collection of age-1 fall Chinook (AC-81). Per Derek Fryer, I bumped the quota for AC-32 (DSS-RR) from 200 fish per day to 400 fish per day. The PC clocks are within two seconds of each other and 15 seconds of atomic time. This is within our standard deviation. There are too many fish at the facility to reset the clocks now. 05/09/2006 17:10 Dave I updated the map file to GRJ06129.MAP to halt further diversion of AC-31 fish (DSS-D, from Dworshak NFH) to the SxC tank, per Derek Fryer's request. I set the gate action to 'X' (monitor only) for AC-31 in the currently-active DU (#18/19). I observed that MultiMon continued to present a No-Op "Divert" label with AC-31 tags detected at the C1-C4 antennas, but the tags were correctly ignored and the fish were correctly detected passing the 91-93 antennas on their way back to the river. Curiously, the counter audit within MultiMon tabulated these same No-op "Diverts" as "Monitor Only", as I would have expected. Regardless of the labels, the fish are being disposed of correctly. I hope that, when the daily counters are reset at 0600h tomorrow, all subsequent detections of AC-31 on the C1-C4 antennas will be correctly labeled as "Monitored". Until then, DGE may indicate an erroneous drop in diversion efficiency. 05/09/2006 13:34 Alan_Bro A GMC was performed 5/3/2006. All transceivers were checked and tuned as necessary. All transceivers were checked and tuned as necessary. The A separator gate was intermittently sticking open and slamming shut at the end of the timeout interval. The cause was found to be that the air cylinder had shifted in it's mount. With the help of site personnel it was adjusted, re-timed and now in good working order. The current gate time settings are: A Gate Delay Before Operate - 0 Travel Open - 12 Time Open - 100 Travel Close - 15 B Gate Delay Before Operate - 0 Travel Open - 21 Time Open - 100 Travel Close - 23 The gate air pressures (psi): Sample Gate - 30 A Gate - 70 B Gate - 70 Diversion SbyC Gate - 70 SbyC Gate - 90 The A and B gates were stick tested with 20 AC255 sticks each. One of those sticks made it out of the head box and went to the Diversion SbyC Gate and then to the SbyC Gate. All sticks diverted correctly, results of the test following: A1 20/20 A2 20/20 B1 20/20 B2 20/20 C1 1/1 C2 1/1 C3 1/1 C4 1/1 D1 1/1 D2 1/1 D3 1/1 Both PC1 and PC2 clocks are within one second of each other and five seconds of atomic time. Multimon is running in full screen mode on both PCs. No problems found. 04/20/2006 15:25 Dave I updated the map file to GRJ06110.MAP. Per a request from Frank Loge via Derek Fryer, I extended the second active interval in DU 15 to collect AC31 and AC32 fish to the SbyC tank for two additional days. Originally, the active interval terminated at 0600h (PST) on April 22. It now terminates at 0600 on April 24. Up to 200 fish per hatchery per day will be collected during the additional two day period. 04/20/2006 10:06 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'ON' to 'OFF' at 2006/04/20 08:33:46 04/20/2006 10:06 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'OFF' to 'ON' at 2006/04/20 08:33:42 04/18/2006 16:25 Dave Updated database and map files to GRJ06108.DB and GRJ06108.MAP, respectively. The new configuration includes "MONITOR ONLY" instructions for the Grande Ronde Steelhead component of LSCRP (GRSTHD-AC49). Per a request from Derek Fryer, I also modified DU #20 to enable diversion to the SbyC tank of up to 100 fish each from both groups of DSS tags (DSS-D:AC31 and DSS-RR:AC32). This action will begin at 7:00PM (PDT) tonight and continue for 12 hours; it essentially augments the next installment of the normal collection schedule, which will commence at 7:00AM (PDT) tomorrow. 04/17/2006 10:25 Dave Received a request from Derek Fryer to re-enable collection of Dworshak Disease Susceptibility Study fish (DSS-D, AC-31) until 4:00 PM (DST) today. I modified the GRJ06107.MAP file to activate collection of any available AC-31 tags to the SbyC tank, coincident with the collection of up to eight DSS-RR (AC-32) tags implemented earlier today. 04/17/2006 08:57 Dave I updated the map file to GRJ06107.MAP. This version contains a "make-up" DU to divert up to eight more Rapid River Disease Susceptibility Study fish (DSS-RR, AC-32) to the SbyC Tank for collection, as requested this morning by Alec Maule (USGS). Per his request, the additional diversion will start at 9:30 AM (PDT) and continue until 4:00 PM (PDT) today, or until eight fish have been diverted. The PC clocks are within 3 seconds of each other and 17 seconds of atomic time. 04/16/2006 11:27 troy@ruf SLC500:CommsFailure: The cable connections should be checked on the next site visit. We have seen these errors during high traffic situations. 04/16/2006 11:26 troy@ruf F2:LowExcCurrent: This will be addressed on the next site visit. 04/15/2006 09:20 troy@ruf SLC500:CommsFailure: This failure did not appear to cause a missed diversion. PSMFC will monitor for future failures. 04/12/2006 13:29 Alan A GMC was performed 4/12/2006. All transceivers were checked and tuned as necessary. The A and B gates were stick tested with 10 AC254 and 10 AC255 sticks each. Those same 40 sticks were sent to the Divrsion SbyC Gate and then to the SbyC Gate. All sticks diverted correctly (20 AC254 diverted left, 20 AC255 diverted right). Results of the test following: A1 20/20 A2 20/20 B1 20/20 B2 20/20 C1 40/40 C2 40/40 C3 40/40 C4 40/40 D1 40/40 D2 40/40 D3 40/40 The gate air pressures (psi): Sample Gate - 40 A Gate - 70 B Gate - 70 Diversion SbyC Gate - 70 SbyC Gate - 90 Both PC1 and PC2 clocks are within one second of each other and seven seconds of atomic time. Multimon is running in full screen mode on both PCs. No problems found. 04/11/2006 14:01 Dave I updated the map and database files to GRJ06100.MAP and GRJ06100.DB, respectively. The new configuration controls the diversion and subsampling of Action Codes 31 (DSS-D) and 32 (DSS-RR), the Disease Susceptibility Study release groups from Dworshak NFH and Rapid River Hatchery, respectively. Using the updated schedule provided to me by Derek Fryer on April 7, tags with these Action Codes will be diverted to the North SbyC Tank net pen (closest to the river). I was initially unable to pcA into GRJ-PC1. Shawn Rapp (WDFW) rebooted GRJ-PC1 for me, which restored pcA connectivity. All gaps in data collection from GRJ-PC1 were fully recorded to, and reported from, GRJ-PC2. I reset the clocks on both PCs to within one second of atomic time. 04/07/2006 14:50 Darren We were on site today 4-7-06 to perform site GMC's. No problems were found at GRA. At GRJ we had two issues that were being dealt with. The first was the leaking water from the end of the Adult fallback Monitor which was creating a possible slip hazard. Alan and I tried to figure out the best way to seal the leak. We have inserted screws with waterstop washers in the holes but we discovered that the water is also leaking from the seams of the sheetmetal flanges. PSMFC will discuss the best way to address this situation next week, the flume cannot be rendered dry according to site Bio Kent blevins. The second issue was to place the plug into the solenoid to try and balance the air better so that we can remove the snubbers, this is currently working at GOJ but I was unable to make it work here for now. the solenoids were replaced back to normal as well the PLC settings and twenty sticks were passed through both "A" and "B" monitors to check timing. No problems were found. 04/07/2006 09:12 alan@ruf SLC500:CommsFailure: Although there was an alarm for PLC the PITtag in question was diverted. PSMFC is aware that this can happen when the volume through a monitor increases. 04/03/2006 09:21 Dave pcA'd into the site's PC2 computer. Stopped and restarted MultiMon to reset "normal" data file generation times, which were disrupted yesterday by the shift from PST to PDT. Darren had already done this to the PC1 computer yesterday. Archived the accumulated data files on PC2. Verified that the two PC clocks were within our standard tolerances (less than five seconds discrepancy between PCs, and less than 30 seconds discrepancy between either PC and atomic time). 04/02/2006 11:01 darren Multimon was stopped and restarted as well as PTTP uploader. This was due to daylight savings. Darren R. Replaced the default GRJ-GEN hardware file on both computers with a GRJ-0600 hardware file, which resets the daily quotas (and enables/disables Separation Protocol #6) at 6AM Pacific Standard Time. This was necessary to accommodate three SbyC requests from NOAA-Fisheries and USGS, all of which are synchronized with transportation activities at the Project that begin and end at 7AM (generally during Pacific Daylight Savings Time). I also installed the GRJ06081.MAP configuration map file, and the GRJ05081.DB database file. The clocks on the two PCs are within two seconds of each other and atomic time. The SbyC platform is ready and waiting for the facility water-up at 7AM (PST) on Saturday, March 25. 03/22/2006 13:01 Dave I completed a pre-season configuration of the SbyC platforms at GRJ. Old data files were archived and/or compressed. Old counter files were deleted (except for the 2005 annual summary), and the counters reset to 0. Old log files were deleted on PC2; on PC1 I belatedly discovered that there were no log files, as the expected "C:\MULTIMON\LOG" directory was mistakenly (since 2000) named as "C:\MULTIMON\LOGS". I renamed the directory to "LOG" to match the expected value defined in GRJ-GEN.HW1. Since there was no updated GRJ-GEN.MAP file on our FTP server, I created one to account for the new antennas F1 and F2 in our Adult Fish Return monitor. I then found out that the map file had already been updated on the remote computers. I overwrote those files with the "official" version from our FTP server. Site reset is complete for the 2006 season. No actual SbyC instructions or databases have been loaded yet. Any gaps in file coverage On March 22 are the result of this work and can be ignored, as the site is not yet active. 03/22/2006 12:51 Dave Yesterday (March 21) I created and processed a GRJ_Timer_Tags.txt file. All GRJ timer tags, including the new tags on the Adult Fish Return monitor (antennas F1 & F2), are now identified in the ptagis3.test_tags table, and our timer tag reports will reflect the full complement of tags deployed at GRJ. 03/21/2006 15:05 DGE_Robo PrimaryBypass (PrimaryBypass) changed from 'CLOSED' to 'OPEN' at 2006/03/21 14:09:34 03/21/2006 15:05 DGE_Robo SampleGateBypass (SBypass) changed from 'OFF' to 'ON' at 2006/03/21 13:41:58 03/21/2006 15:05 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'ON' to 'OFF' at 2006/03/21 13:41:56 03/21/2006 15:05 DGE_Robo Sample_100% (A_S100) changed from 'ON' to 'OFF' at 2006/03/21 13:39:45 03/21/2006 15:05 DGE_Robo Sample_100% (A_S100) changed from 'OFF' to 'ON' at 2006/03/21 13:39:42 03/21/2006 15:05 DGE_Robo SampleGateBypass (SBypass) changed from 'ON' to 'OFF' at 2006/03/21 13:37:41 03/21/2006 15:05 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'OFF' to 'ON' at 2006/03/21 13:37:40 03/21/2006 15:05 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'ON' to 'OFF' at 2006/03/21 13:09:41 03/21/2006 15:05 DGE_Robo SampleGateBypass (SBypass) changed from 'OFF' to 'ON' at 2006/03/21 13:09:40 03/21/2006 15:04 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'OFF' to 'ON' at 2006/03/21 13:06:41 03/21/2006 15:04 DGE_Robo SampleGateBypass (SBypass) changed from 'ON' to 'OFF' at 2006/03/21 13:05:41 03/21/2006 15:04 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'ON' to 'OFF' at 2006/03/21 13:05:36 03/21/2006 15:04 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'OFF' to 'ON' at 2006/03/21 13:05:33 03/21/2006 15:04 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'ON' to 'OFF' at 2006/03/21 12:57:58 03/21/2006 15:04 DGE_Robo DivertDuringSample (A_DDSample) changed from 'OFF' to 'ON' at 2006/03/21 12:57:56 03/21/2006 14:34 Alan A GMC was performed 3/21/2006.
