Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 10/18/2011 16:12 Davids Operations are normal. Water has risen enough to submerge most, if not all of the antennas. Our first juvenile of the fall season was detected on Monday, October 17th on antenna 6! Nose levels seem reasonable with the exception of antenna three which has fluctuating periods of high noise (~60%) and low noise (~5%). Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 09/26/2011 13:43 Davids KHS is operational again after a period of downtime. A new site configuration is in place and is described below: Upper instream array (coil, size): (A1, 20') (A2, 10') Lower instream array (coil, size): (A3, 20') (A4, 10') (A5, 10') (A6, 10') Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 07/22/2011 15:52 Davids KHS has been taken offline and disabled as of 15:11 on 7/22/2011, for use the MUX in testing newly built antennas at our shop. When antenna construction is completed, the interrogation site will be put back online. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 07/14/2011 14:09 Davids Operations normal. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 06/24/2011 16:43 Davids Operations normal. Big Bear Creek flows have come down substantially and are expected to stay low for the next several months. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 05/05/2011 11:06 Davids On 4/20/2011 at 14:28:48, all six antennas were re-installed and resumed operation. Upon re-installation of KHS on 4/20/11 several changes were made to the design. A1 and A4 are twenty foot antennas, while A2, A3, A5 and A6 are 10 foot antennas. Two large eye bolts are set into two large boulders on the stream bank and support a string of 1/8" steel cable that leads to the nearest underwater connections on A1 and A4. The coax cables are threaded through these eyebolts then zip tied to the 1/8" steel cable to provide support for the coax cables when river debris builds upon them. Normal operations were interrupted several times beginning 04/24/11 at 06:18:52 when battery bank B began to fail. This caused several gaps in data collection until 05/04/11 at 14:58:59 when battery bank B was replaced with two new Sterling 24RV-90 batteries. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 04/22/2011 14:58 Davids Antennas were re-installed and the array has been operating since 4/20/11, around 1600 PDT. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 04/01/2011 09:51 Davids On March 29th, flow dropped under 2,000cfs at the USGS gage below Little Potlatch Creek which allowed us to wade into Big Bear Creek to inspect the antennas at KHS and investigate why current was lost. Antennas were found to be damaged beyond repair. On March 30th, flow exceeded 8,000cfs at the USGS gage below Little Potlatch Creek. Flow has decreased some and is currently discharging 4,650cfs. When flow decreases to the point where Big Bear Creek is safe to wade in again, the broken antennas will be replaced. There is still rain in the forecast for the next seven days. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 03/17/2011 12:42 Davids The last test tags fired on each antenna before current was lost: A1 - 3/10/11 18:15:01 A2 - 3/10/11 18:15:01 A3 - 3/13/11 10:46:20 A4 - 3/13/11 22:55:17 A5 - 3/13/11 22:55:17 A6 - 3/11/11 04:15:04 Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 03/17/2011 11:03 Davids A high water event has ceased operations. Flows fluctuating between 2000 and 6000cfs since 3/10/11 have left the interrogation site out of commission. It is yet to be determined what exactly is damaged, but it will be investigated and reported as soon as flows subside. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 03/09/2011 15:14 Davids Operations normal. High noise levels on antenna 3. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 02/28/2011 15:40 Davids Noise is high on antenna 3, but read distance is 11". Operations are back to normal. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 02/16/2011 13:27 Davids On 2/9/11 at 16:22, antennas 1,2,4 and 5 were re-installed. On 2/10/11 at 13:54, antennas 3 and 6 were re-installed. The site experienced some significant erosion near antennas 3 and 6 during the flood event on 1/18/11, therefore the arrays were moved downstream approximately 25 meters to find more suitable substrate to anchor antennas. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 01/18/2011 14:32 Davids Last detection for antenna 5 was on 01/16/11 at 07:49:28. Last detection for antenna 6 was on 01/11/11 at 11:55:24. The last detection at the KHS PIT tag array site was on 01/16/11 at 09:49:28. The site is currently not operational. Nick Davids Senior Fisheries Technician IDFG/PSMFC 3316 16th Street Lewiston, Idaho 83501 208-799-5010 nick.davids@idfg.idaho.gov 01/18/2011 14:12 Davids An epic run-off event has occurred that has caused a loss of all six antennas at the site. Stream flow peaked at 14,300 cfs on 1/16/11 around 6:00pm at the Potlatch NOAA hydrograph site, and has been dropping steadily since then. Flow currently is measured at 4750 cfs and continues to drop. Antennas 1 and 4 were last detected a test tag on 01/16/11 at 09:49:28. Antennas 2 and 3 last detected a test tag on 04 01/16/11 at 07:49:28. One antenna was found washed-up approximately 100 feet downstream, mangled and broken into several pieces. All 6 cables were disconnected and two still had the underwater plug intact. The full extent of the damage is still unknown.
