All readers and antennas removed from service and Pit Tag room powered down on May 1, 2003. All tag files uploaded to Ptagis and equipment is currently in storage at Biomark in Boise Idaho. 05/02/2003 12:09 Dave Per Nikky Johnson at Rapid River Hatchery, the 2003 spring chinook volitional release has completed. The last of the fish were seined from the pond on April 28. The RPJ computer has been shut down or disconnected since 9:00 am on May 1. I have disabled site checking. 04/23/2003 07:55 acarson@ 07:TestTagFailure: Checked test tag operation of reader. Tested 100%. However, will not pass a singular test tag firing. Reader reads fish and stick tags good. 04/23/2003 07:39 acarson@ 01:LowLithium,01:TestTagFailure: 01:LowLithium,01:TestTagFailure: Replaced lithium battery and checked system operation. System detects fish and stick tags normally. Ops checked good. 04/23/2003 07:38 acarson@ 01:LowLithium,01:TestTagFailure: Replaced lithium battery and checked system operation. System detects fish and stick tags normally. Ops checked good. 04/23/2003 07:36 acarson@ 02:Overrun: Overrun error is intermittent. System ops checked good and is detecting fish normally 04/23/2003 07:35 acarson@ 07:TestTagFailure: 07:TestTagFailure: Functional tested Test Tag system. 100% operation but will not fire singularly. Reader is detecting fish and stick tags properly. 04/23/2003 07:35 acarson@ 07:TestTagFailure: Functional tested Test Tag system. 100% operation but will not fire singularly. Reader is detecting fish and stick tags properly. 04/15/2003 14:48 Brett_T. Routine maintenance trip to RPJ on 4/15/03. I turned off the test tag for coil 01 because it apparently is gong bad and only works intermittently. It can't be repaired until after the RPJ season. Everything else is OK. The fish at RPJ are rapidly leaving, should all be gone in the next week or two. 04/14/2003 08:36 acarson@ 04:TestTagFailure: fish in the field caused test tag failure 04/14/2003 08:02 acarson@ 02:BadExcFreq,02:BadOscFreq,02:LowExcCurrent,02:Overrun,02:TestTagFailure: Low exciter current, bad exciter frequency and bad osc. frequency was corrected on 4/9/03. Overrrun likely occured during massive fish move at night. Test tag failure occured during routine testing and maintenance 04/14/2003 07:55 acarson@ 01:TestTagFailure: I believe test tag is broken. Unable to fix it until after field season 04/08/2003 09:16 Brett The 3 coil underflow system with the bad middle coil was replaced with the four coil overflow system on 4/07/03. Now, we have eight working coils at RPJ. I think the test tag on coil 01 is a little flakey. It doesn't come up every time the coil is turned on, and the test tag hit rate is low. However, the coil itself is working well when I test it with stick tags. Coil 02 is noisier than the other coils. It occassionally spikes up to @ 35% or so. It usually settles down in the 8 to 10% range. The other coils are a lot quieter, around the 3-5% level. Coil 02 works well however when I test it with test tags. The 3 coil underflow system is going to be sent to Destron for repair. 04/08/2003 08:25 acarson@ 04:TestTagFailure: Coil 04 was uninstalled at this time due to antenna failure. It was re-installed on 4/07/03 04/08/2003 08:25 acarson@ 03:BadExcFreq,03:BadOscFreq,03:TestTagFailure: Alarms occured during antenna installation and tuning 04/08/2003 08:23 acarson@ 02:BadExcFreq,02:BadOscFreq,02:LowExcCurrent,02:Overrun,02:TestTagFailure: Antenna failure caused the above alarms. Antenna replaced on 4/07/03 04/08/2003 08:21 acarson@ 01:BadExcFreq,01:BadOscFreq,01:LowExcCurrent,01:TestTagFailure: Alarms occured during reader installation and tuning 04/07/2003 06:52 Brett We brought the "broken" antenna array from RPJ back to the shop for repair. There were four rejected PIT tags that were washed between coil 04 and the shield. I removed the tags and coil 04 began working. Four tags in the field would certainly explain the 85% noise, and the dead coil. I sprayed the antenna and shield down with a hose to clean it up and look for more tags, then tested it and it works great. I am planning on re-installing the antenna array back at RPJ on Monday (4/7/03). 04/04/2003 07:36 PTOC_Bot 4/03/03 at 9:30 PST, I removed the lower antenna array with the bad antenna and replaced it with the original 3 coil underflow antenna. Immediately upon installation, the middle coil (02) died. It would not respond to any tuning at all. The phase was 38, signal 1% and current was 0.0 (i.e. the reader acted like it didn't see an antenna). I tried a diffrerent reader to make sure I didn't have a bad reader, but other readers wouldn't work either. I brought back the overflow array with the bad antenna, and will try to replace the bad antenna with one Destron provided us, and reinstall this antenna next week, hopefully Monday. So, right now, RPJ has six god coils (01 and 03 underflow, and 05,06,07,08 overflow). 04/01/2003 15:45 Brett_T. Weekly maintenance of Rapid River juvenile. Reader 02 is starting to get noisy like reader 04 did last week (04 now out of commission). All other readers working fine. We are going to run some tests with the 3 antenna underflow system in the shop, and hoefully install it at RPJ on Thursday (4/3) 04/01/2003 07:52 jmccown@ 04:BadExcFreq,04:BadOscFreq,04:LowExcCurrent,04:TestTagFailure: 04:BadExcFreq,04:BadOscFreq,04:LowExcCurrent,04:TestTagFailure: Failure alarms created during maintenance activities. 04/01/2003 07:51 jmccown@ 04:BadExcFreq,04:BadOscFreq,04:LowExcCurrent,04:TestTagFailure: Failure alarms created during maintenance activities. 04/01/2003 07:50 jmccown@ 03:BadExcFreq,03:BadOscFreq,03:LowExcCurrent,03:NoAntenna,03:TestTagFailur e: Failure alarms created during maintenance. Subsequent test tags successfully detected. 04/01/2003 07:44 jmccown@ 02:BadExcFreq,02:BadOscFreq,02:LowExcCurrent,02:Overrun,02:TestTagFailure: March 26 failure alarms caused during equipment maintenance. March 31 failure alarms (Overruns) were short in duration and cleared, and (Test Tag Failure) was concurrent with actual fish tag detection. Subsequent test tags successfully detected. 04/01/2003 07:36 jmccown@ 01:BadExcFreq,01:LowExcCurrent,01:TestTagFailure: 01:BadExcFreq,01:LowExcCurrent,01:TestTagFailure: Failure alarms created during maintenance and repair of antenna equipment 04/01/2003 07:36 jmccown@ 01:BadExcFreq,01:LowExcCurrent,01:TestTagFailure: Failure alarms created during maintenance and repair of antenna equipment 03/31/2003 15:08 Dave Uploaded RPJ03084.D2, created from the PC2 version of RPJ03084.D provided by Brett Turley, to patch a previously-existing hole in data collection caused by a power interruption on PC1 during the creation of RPJ03084.D. I truncated the D2 version at 11:31 am to correspond with the resumption of data collection on the PC1 platform with RPJ03084.E. FWIW, the clocks on the two computers differ by 63 seconds. 03/27/2003 08:20 Brett_T. Jay McCown and I arrived at Rapid River to replace the underflow antenna array with the spare. We turned off the underflow antenna readers and installed the spare antenna's readers and tested the spare antenna array on land, before we installed it in the water. The middle antenna current was extremely low (0.1 to 0.0 amps) and it would not read a tag. We tried a different reader and had the same result. So we concluded that something is wrong with the antenna and will not read tags. We decided to keep the existing underflow antenna array in place, and we blocked the orifice for antenna 04 with a piece of plywood to prevent fish from swimming through it. I didn't time it, but I would estimate that the entire underflow antenna array was shut down for about two hours while we swapped readers and tested the other underflow antenna array. 03/27/2003 08:10 Brett_T. 3/25/03 Rapid River Juvenile weekly maintenance trip. Coil 04 was extremely noisy (75-85% noise level) and would not read a tag, or its own test tag. I swapped readers to see if the reader was bad, and the problem still occurred. I believe the coil is bad. I could do nothing to quiet the noise, or get it to read a tag. After speaking with Jay McCown at Biomark (I could not reach Don W., Scott L. or Darren C.) we decided to replace the underflow antenna array with the spare underflow antenna on Wednesday 3/26/03). 03/24/2003 12:31 jmccown@ 01:TestTagFailure,03:TestTagFailure,06:TestTagFailure: All three Coils indicate a Test Tag Failure at random times and they also occur the same time as a Pit Tag scan. There is no subsequent Test Tag or fish tag failure and no. Test tag frequency is at 60 minutes and will be changed to 180 minutes to minimize alarm occurance. 03/21/2003 09:54 acarson@ 04:TestTagFailure: ~07-11 03/17/03 18:01:57 ALARM MESSAGE: Test Tag Found. ~04-8 03/17/03 18:01:58 ALARM MESSAGE: Single-shot test with Test Tag. Test Tag fired simultaneous with fish interrogation. ~04-8 03/17/03 18:01:58 ALARM PROBLEM: Test Tag Failed | 08 03/17/03 18:01:58 3D9.1BF17F1252 XX 04 03/19/2003 09:58 Dave Ralph Steiner, RAPH hatchery manager, informed me that the volitional pond release began at approximately 1:00pm on March 17. 03/17/2003 09:11 Darren_C I have tried to PCA into the site to try and find out why it has not been loading but the connection is coming back as busy. Jay McCowen from Biomark is currently on his way to the site to install another coil. I have a message for him to call me when he arrives on site. It is possible that the phone connection was dropped during a file transfer and Minimon is locked up and creating one big file. I will know more whne I talk with Jay and will post the findings. 03/07/2003 15:34 Brett The data computers at RPJ were not sending data automatically to PTAGIS. Consulting with Darren and Scott L., we determined that the likely cause was that the dial-up connection was not automatically connecting because the password was incorrect and/or the automatic connect box was not checked on the dial-up network connection. I sent all of the data files to ptagis, and configured the dial-up to automatically connect. I also re- booted the computers to make sure the settings were saved. They were correct upon boot up. 03/07/2003 09:37 Dave Enabled file upload monitoring in etc/sites. 02/25/2003 08:06 Brett_Tu At Scott Livingstons request, I set up the computer to send files to PTAGIS at 9:40 am on 2/21/03. The fish at Rapid River will not be released until mid-March (3/12, the last I heard), so we shouldn't receive any detections until then. 02/25/2003 07:53 Brett Transceivers 6 and 8 on the underflow antenna also developed the problem of resetting when I request a diagnostic report from Minimon. I pulled the CPU boards from each transceiver and brought them back to the shop. Jay McCown tested them in the shop, and deteremined that they needed to go back to Destron for repair. The underflow antenna will not be installed until 3/12/03. 02/23/2003 16:06 acarson@ Jay McCown: Conducted an initial activation of the Rapid River Volitional release monitoring system on the 19th of February. Both overflow antennas, all 8 transceivers, and Pit tag room were activated and tested. All systems were operational except transceiver 2C (Coil ID 03) which went into reset mode when queried by the remote computer or front keypad control. The digital CPU card was found bad and replaced. This card is being RMA processed by Biomark and returned to Destron for repair/replacement. Final installation/activation date for the Rapid River site is March 15th. 02/20/2003 15:19 Scott_Li FYI... Per Brett Turley, Biomark Inc. the overflow antenna and transceivers have been installed and tuned. The other overflow antenna will again take the place of the underflow antenna as it did last year, but will not be installed until a later date just prior to fish release. More soon as it becomes available. 02/05/2003 11:11 Scott_Li Per Brett Turley, ( Biomark Inc.) they are planning on installing the antennas and transceivers on Feb. 17th. Informed Brett on the proper startup procedures for the interrogation platform and asked him to call me before the file test submission switch is disabled in the pttp uploader. Will continue to monitor progress up until the site is in production mode. 01/01/2003 12:19 Dave Initialized new event log for 2003. 2002 event log has been archived. ####End of Event Log for RPJ###
