Date Time Who ---------- ----- -------- 07/07/2011 11:17 Bob_Magi Sampling for outmigrating PIT-tagged juvenile salmonids with a surface pair-trawl in the Columbia River Estuary concluded 1 July 2011. Intensive sampling (two daily shifts) was conducted from 2 May to 10 June. We sampled for a total of 669 hours and detected 14,116 PIT-tagged fish. The lower total number of detections this year compared to 2010 (31,325) is a direct result of the high river flows observed through most of the sampling season. As observed in other high flow years, juvenile out migrants were greater dispersed and traveled faster through the sampling reach reducing our opportunity to detect them. Additionally, sampling time was reduced as crews spent more time traveling to higher sections of the sampling reach to set the trawl than in lower flow years. Intotal, we detected 5,574 yearling Chinook salmon, 1,651 subyearling Chinook salmon, 325 coho, 5,186 steelhead, 433 sockeye, 1 cutthroat and 946 fish without release information at this date (unknown). Sampling with the Mobile separation by code (MSbyC) vessel with the pair-trawl was delayed until late in the season due to delays in modifications to the vessel. Sampling occurred on one occasion (June 24) when densities of PIT-tagged fish in the estuary were low. We sampled for 2.5hrs and recovered 4 PIT-tagged Chinook salmon. Additionally, we diverted all flow to the sample tank for a total of 5 minutes and recovered 96 untagged Chinook salmon, 2 untagged steelhead and 23 stickleback. 04/04/2011 12:44 Bob_Magi Sampling in the Columbia River Estuary (approximately rkm 61-83) for PIT-tagged juvenile salmonids with a surface trawl was initiated on 22 March 2011.Using the matrix PIT tag antenna developed in 2008 (8.5ft wide x 10ft tall fish passage tunnel) fixed to the cod end of the trawl enabling fish to pass through the system unhandled, we initiated sampling 3 days weekly.Sampling will increase to daily sampling 5 days per week and finally to two daily sampling shifts 7 days per week (excluding one night shift per week), as densities of PIT-tagged fish in the estuary increase and warrant the effort (typically in early May). This effort will remain consistent through the high fish density period of the juvenile outmigration season. As detection rates decrease (late June or early July) sampling will be reduced to 5 days weekly using one daily shift until sampling is halted. Testing of a modified mobile separation by code device used with the matrix trawl will be conducted periodically throughout the outmigration season (1 to 2 days weekly) to evaluate effectiveness and impacts to fish. 01/01/2011 00:00 PTOC_Bot Annual log file initiation for TWX #### End of Event Log for TWX ###
