MEW - Early Winters Acclimation Pond

Status:   Active - Non-Operational
Site Type: Monitored Fish Release  |  Organization: Yakama Nation
General Operational Period: Seasonally
Start Date: 5/3/2019 12:00 AM

Two kidney bean shaped ponds were designed and constructed from 2017 thru 2018 on the Freestone Inn at Wilson Ranch and adjacent to Early Winters Creek and 30 meters south of HWY 20 in Mazama, WA. The antennas are located at the outlet structures of both ponds and in Early Winters Creek at the outlet pipe. Outlet pipes from both ponds join in a common gallery before flowing back into Early Winters Creek. Acclimation of juvenile salmon at this site will occur on a yearly basis. One antenna will be used at the outlet of each pond that has PIT tags. Two antennas will be used in Early Winters Creek where the outlet pipe is located, dependant on creek flow. The interrogation systems are intended to monitor in-pond and smolt to adult survival. The antennas will be operational during release. Typical times of operation for this site will be March 15 thru June 1.

Interrogation event log for the Early Winters Pond Acclimation Ponds (MEW)-2021 release

PIT tag interrogation system (Antenna A1) for the Early Winters Pond 1 began on 04-28-2021 at 1330 hrs. Antenna (A1) was located at the outlet of Pond 1. Antenna (A1) was never moved. Antenna (A1) did experience a lapse in coverage due to a bad card on 04-28-2021 at 1530 hrs until replaced on 04-29-2021 at 1800 hrs. A total of 6 files were downloaded throughout the interrogation period and were incorporated into a single file. The last download for this antenna occurred on 05-11-2021 at 1300 hrs.

PIT tag interrogation system (Antenna C1) for the Early Winters Pond 1, began on 04-28-2021 at 1300 hrs. Antenna (C1) was located approximately 25 meters downstream of Antenna (A1) and in Early Winters Creek. Antenna (C1) experienced two lapses in coverage. The first lapse in coverage occurred on 04-30-2021 at 0130 hrs until downloaded on 05-04-2021 at 1430 hrs. The second lapse in coverage occurred on 05-06-2021 at 1500hrs until downloaded on 05-10-2021 at 1314 hrs.  A total of 6 files were downloaded throughout the interrogation period and were incorporated into a single file. The last download for this antenna occurred on 05-11-2021 at 1300 hrs.

Both antennas were pulled on 05-11-2021 at approximately 1400hrs following a visual survey that the pond was devoid of all hatchery coho.  Hatchery juvenile coho were not marked with PIT tags in Pond 2 for the 2021 acclimation season.
