UGS - Upper Grande Ronde Starkey

Status:   Active - Operational
Site Type: Instream Remote Detection System  |  Organization: Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife
General Operational Period: Year Round
Start Date: 11/3/2017 12:00 AM

Instream detection array near the upper Grande Ronde weir at Starkey, consisting of a IS1001-MTS multiplexing receiver and eight antennas, each with 24v IS1001s. Antenna arrays consist of eight antennas that span the normal high water mark and are secured to the substrate for pass-over detection. Three antennas are placed side-by-side to span the creek for the upstream two arrays, and two antennas are placed side-by-side to span the creek for the downstream most array. This provides three separate arrays of coverage. Site is grid powered and operates year-round. Site is on private land.

Configuration metadata includes details about the equipment used at the site to detect and record PIT tags. A new configuration sequence record is created when equipment is added or removed from the site and the period of time it was active. A configuration sequence without an End Date is currently active.

Event Log Summary

Event Date Event Type Comments
4/29/2022 1:00:00 PM SiteUp

UGS now has 5 of 7 antennas working (Antennas 4,5,6,7, and 8). Upstream antennas (2 &3) will be down until flows come back down and we can access them to determine if a node is flooded or another issue with the cabling. Data was downloaded and uploaded to ptagis.

4/9/2022 8:52:00 AM SiteDown

Little over half of the UGS antenna site went down with 3 of the 7 antennas remaining working (middle array continued working, upstream/downstream went down). Antennas 7 & 8 went down on April 7th while antennas 2 &3 went down on April 9th. The reason for the antennas going down is believed to be a flooded node on one of the upstream arrays. At this moment, we are unable to get in the river to determine the cause of the short.

3/18/2022 10:00:00 AM General

Checked to make sure all the antennas were up and running. Downloaded data to be uploaded to ptagis.

1/13/2022 1:56:00 PM SiteUp

Remote connection to UGS re-established. Manual data download at site to retrieve tags since 12/21/21.

12/21/2021 11:00:00 PM SiteDown

Remote connection lost with UGS

11/9/2021 4:14:00 PM General

Site visit to download data.  We also re-secured antennas 2 and 3 to the stream bottom.  Antenna 1, a 10 foot antenna, was removed from the site because it was non-functional and was only covered by water for brief periods of time in the spring during high flow events.

10/26/2021 1:00:00 PM GMC

Replaced the node for antenna 2.  The node for antenna 1 is still missing.  Antennas 2 - 8 are functional.

8/31/2021 6:00:00 PM SiteUp

Site apparently was not recording any data between 7/6 - 8/31, reason for this is unclear.

7/6/2021 5:00:00 AM SiteDown

Site apparently was not recording any data between 7/6 - 8/31, reason for this is unclear.

4/13/2021 11:26:14 AM General The site has been downloaded frequently in April. As of January, nodes 1 and 2 are not operational. Nodes 3-8 are still attached and reading. Plans to repair the nodes are in place for when the water levels drop.
8/7/2020 3:00:00 PM General Repaired damaged cables leading to upstream (antennas 1-3) and downstream (antennas 7-8) arrays. Antennas 3, 7, and 8 are now back online; antennas 1 and 2 are still offline.
7/30/2020 5:09:47 PM General Site visit to download data. Antennas 4, 5, and 6 were working. Antennas 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8 are still offline.
5/27/2020 10:44:27 AM General On May 20th 2020, UGR experienced very high flows. These flows caused large amounts of debris to become mobile. At the array site, the cable for antennas 1, 2, and 3 was destroyed at the connection point. This disabled the upstream array (1,2,3). Antenna 1 appears to have been shifted and could be totaled. On May 26th 2020, a backhoe was used to recover the live box for the adult weir. While traversing the bank to the trap location, the cables for antennas 7 and 8 may have been compromised (connected and tuned at 0900 on 5/26). As of May 27th, antennas 4, 5, and 6 are the only attached and functioning antennas. The cables that run to the upstream array have been disconnected from the master controller unit to remove power from the broken end of the cable.
2/27/2020 12:05:00 PM General Site is in good condition, beaver habitat that had accumulated was cleared during high flow event. All nodes attached and tuned, some high noise warnings. Data downloaded.
10/17/2019 8:53:00 AM General Replaced a bad connector for Antennas 7 that caused the antenna to get unplugged. Updated firmware. Due to the bad connector, Antenna 7 was not working between 4/11/19 and 10/17/2019. The bad connector was replaced around 9:30 a.m. on 10/17/2019.
4/11/2019 3:41:00 PM General Antenna 7 was disconnected at about 1700 hrs on 4/11/19 and is not working. We will update the event logs when the problem is resolved.
3/5/2019 10:22:08 AM General Upgraded Master Controller firmware to MC Application v1.6.4.S19 and CBG Firmware v1.6.5. The river covered in ice.
1/15/2019 3:25:00 PM SiteUp UGS site has been repaired and is fully operational as of 1325 on 1/15/2019
12/17/2018 5:25:00 PM SiteDown The UGS site is down. Problems with the power connection point caused the electrical plug to short out. Replacement parts have been ordered.
12/7/2018 10:14:00 AM General Antenna node 7 became disconnected on 12/7/2018 after 10:14 AM. This was caused by the attachment point separating from the node. This was fixed on 1/11/2019 at 3:00 PM.
10/15/2018 10:51:00 PM General Site was not collecting data between 10/15/2018 at 10:51 PM to 10/23/2018 at 10:35 AM. During a site visit on 10/23/2018, we found that the site had been on standby since the last visit on 10/15/2018.
5/8/2018 3:43:26 PM General Adjusted time to Pacific Standard Time at about 10:00 a.m.
5/4/2018 2:07:13 PM General Antenna 1 has been out of tune since December 2017. Tuned Antenna 1 and turned Dynamic Tuning on.
